911 First Responders and Workers Not Invited

The list of disrespect against the first responders is long and it just got longer. How upset are we? Let me count the ways. In a move to keep ALL first responder away from WTC on the tenth anniversary of 911, Mayor Bloomberg has not invited, some say ordered, that all first responders to stay away citing lack of room to accommodate everyone.

Another stab in the heart to all first responders and site workers who gave all on 911 and on the days afterward. Our city and country call on us and we were there. Never did anyone complain or not do their job.

Now,many of the first responders see the decision as continued proof of the city's and the US attempt to push to the background their untreated ailments in the official narrative of recovery and renewal. Whatever happened to“the promise we'll never forget”, seems it was an obvious lie. Should not have been a surprise, after all our country is loaded with incidents when they turned their back on its citizens. Does Tuskegee sound familiar? I could list a lot here.

Now, I can fix this problem real easy. STOP MAKING IT A POLITICAL EVENT!!! KEEP THE POLITICIANS AWAY!!!. Having said that, there should be several that are allowed. President Bush, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Senator Charles Schumer, Former Senator, now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They were there; they saw firsthand and made decisions in the aftermath. All other politicians need to stay away. We do not want to hear a speech about your horror, what you did, and more when you were not even there.

This is a memorial event, not a campaign stop. A time to remember, to mourn, to grieve, to remember, to honor. Those that were there are the ones that need to be there to do that.

The last time the President came to New York WTC site, he used the FDNY as a political prop. He came to their house, tried to be friendly, and said he wanted to sample firehouse chow. But that changed quickly when he was questioned why he signed the Zagroda Act. He suddenly wanted the cameras off and left the house abruptly.

Now because he wants to attend the 911 anniversary, bring his large group of officials, and of course all the security he entails, the first responders are paying the cost and have not been invited. Why should he be allowed there? He was not there, he did nothing then or in the years after to help or honor any of those who gave their life and for the citizens who died. He was in NY 6 times and never went to the WTC site, not even a drive by. But he ran there when Bin Laden was killed, making a political event out of it, taking credit for something he had nothing to do with. Now with his political future in jeopardy he is planning a shindig, just like the bus force tour. This will cost the taxpayers a fortune in security, travel expenses and more.

Time to stop using 911 as a political toy. We need to address the medical needs of the first responders and all workers that were there. For those who think the responders are being taken care of, they are not. NY workers Compensation has denied all claims of the first responders. Those who have gotten sick, their insurance policies will not cover them. Most insurance policies have escape clauses on attacks from war and terrorism. The Zagroda act does not recognize cancer and a number of diseases that have come out of 911. Does anyone not find it odd these cancers, breathing problems, lung problems, blood abnormalities, and more are happening to the first responders and the workers?

The first responders deserve much respect and any medical help that is needed stemming from their injuries should be addressed. As to why they are not allowed there, a CNN report said that space was the issue. There is literally not enough space for survivers and families of survivers and all 911 responders and workers to fit in the alloted space. I would like to think that is the only reason. As to politicians making it a stumping point...that will probably never change. America lost some of its innocence that day and our lives and how we look at security has been forever changed.

Peggy,

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I know that is what CNN, Fox and MSNBC are all reporting. But do you not find it odd there was never a space problem in the previous 9 years and especially the last 3? Is it because there were not many politicians there? Mayor Bloomburg has said on WPIX TV in NEW YORK that the amount of dignitaries and the much added NY security, not to mention the traveling entourages has created the space issue. Now if those politicians cared before, they would have shown up each and every one of those 9 prior years. But they were all no shows, Including President Obama who was invited 3 times prior and turned it down each time. So one has to ask what is different? Can you say Campaigning? Now just so those out there who think this is Obama bashing, I will be equally pissed if any of the Presidential candidates show up there. They will lose any respect I may have for them as of this moment.

Now I know I will be accused of making it personal as I was a LT in FDNY and was there. Maybe it's true to a point, but being disrespectful by not coming before and not doing anything we asked of the politicians on our behalf does not qualify them to be there. And nothing ticks off a NYer than being disrespectful. I believe those who were First responders, workers and all their families of the deceased should be the ones to be there to memorialize our lost ones. We truly know firsthand the lose of our nation that day.

I love your point about it being a memorial and not a campaign stop. Thank you for sharing this hub.

I agree wholeheartedly on who should attend. All the rest need to stay away or go to Pennsylvania or the Pentagon. Can't we do anything right? Must we always prostitute heroism and grief. Some dignity is needed here, some respect. AV thank you for this remender we needed it, Peter

You **should** make it personal. Dignitaries, and this president have no business going to a memorial for people they did not know, and did not care about.

heck, unless I'm mistaken, this president did not even vote to help the United States bring the terrorists to an end!

Politicizing this is unsightly, and we should all be vocal about what is happening. I agree that those who were there, who gave their lives, their health, and their true and sincere sorrow (as President Bush et al.) should attend. Those who are using this as a photo-op should just stay in Martha's Vinyard and stay in the ocean, swimming and enhancing their pigment.

Peter says it well when he says "prostitute heroism and grief" as though it is a campaign stop.

Thank you, American View, for your service to a small part of our great country! The world is better having you in it.

It appears that this is just to be a 'dog and pony show' and the people on the front line who deserve recognition and made the sacrifice are, now that the time has past, expendible. That applies to ALL politicians, not just Obama.
