Are Your Electric Rates Going Up Soon?
70
The New Year is here, and with are over 40,000 new laws nationwide, tens of thousands new regulations, and let’s not forget the tax increases. Well we did get that big withholding tax break for two months.
One of the things Obama made clear after taking office he was against coal. Numerous times over the last three years he made statements against the coal industry while pushing his green energy agenda. So the EPA has put new sweeping regulations on coal fire plants, mainly addressing the plants that generate electric.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards that went into effect January 1, 2012. The Mercury and Air Toxics Standards are in keeping with President Obama’s Executive. It is the EPAs contention the law was passed to limit power plant emissions of mercury and toxic air pollution like arsenic, acid gas, nickel, selenium, and cyanide. After the release of the new regulations, the EPA put out the following statement:
“By cutting emissions that are linked to developmental disorders and respiratory illnesses like asthma, these standards represent a major victory for clean air and public health– and especially for the health of our children”.
After the EPA announcement President Obama made a statement:
“Today's issuance, by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), of the final Mercury and Air Toxics Standards rule for power plants (the "MATS Rule") represents a major step forward in my Administration's efforts to protect public health and the environment.”
The Electric Reliability Coordinating Council released this statement:
““The bottom line: This rule is the most expensive air rule that EPA has ever proposed in terms of direct costs,” said Scott Segal, director of the Electric Reliability Coordinating Council. “It is certainly the most extensive intervention into the power market and job market that EPA has ever attempted to implement.”
The Associated Press surveyed utilities across the nation and estimated that 32 power plants will be shut down.
Of course the media did not mention this much because it was announced on December 23, 2011. If you're a savvy political appointee, like say Lisa Jackson the Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, and you're bringing out the Mercury and Air Toxic Standards for Power Plants rule that will raise electricity rates all over the country, particularly in battleground states of Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, and Michigan. What can you do to get the public to swallow the costs? Timing is everything, and you choose the Wednesday before Christmas, when most people aren't paying attention.
It's a shame the Regulatory Accountability Act of 2011, the bill Ohio Republican Senator Rob Portman proposed, has not been made law. His bill would require a detailed analysis of the costs and the benefits of such regulations and Executive orders. Since the Democrats did not allow it to become law, it will be to late before Americans find out the cost. The cost of compliance of this is staggering and this will raise energy prices considerably. The industry experts say many will make the plants compliant. There are many that it are not cost effective to update so they will be converted from coal to natural gas fired plants. But there are those that are not matter which conversion chosen, it is not cost effective to comply with the new regulations and those plants will be closed. Depending on whose report one can believe, estimates range between 18% and 35% of plants are going to be shut down.
Aside from the obvious costs due to lost jobs and the conversion costs being passed on to the consumer, there is another potential downfall. Our nation’s electrical energy is already stretched to the max on an aging grid system. Obama had campaigned in 2008 to ensure repairing this problem and providing a stronger grid system. Obama never addressed that issue but now with this Executive Order he will be straining the already fragile system. We can expect more brownouts and rolling outages as the demand get worse.
Estimates are that the closing will cost about 1.7 million jobs due to the closings. This is far from the right time to put an extra strain on the cost of energy for the middleclass to bear. Perhaps a wiser way to approach the issue was to start with the older plants that will now have to shut down and build replacements prior to shutting down and putting an unsesassary strain on the grid. The last things we need are more electricity disruptions not to mention higher electrical rates. That is my American view, tell me yours.

- Calling Out Harry Reid
Everyday Congressmen and Senators get onto the floor of their respective chambers and give speeches on different topics. Then they'll gather in the rotunda to give news conferences blaming each other for the issue at hand doesn't get resolved. Of course now that it is campaign season, they give broader speeches, and at times their speech has nothing to do with the issue at hand for which they were supposed to be addressing. I want to make it clear that both sides are guilty of this, but am only - 44 hours ago

Raising my kids I always told them to be responsible, to take responsibility for their actions. If you did something wrong, be honest, step up and take the punishment that may come for your actions. That’s what I have done my entire life and expect no more or less of my kids. I have been far from an angel in my life, but I took responsibility for my actions, including having been in jail, I never blame anyone nor do I expect anything. There should not be any rewards for not being responsible. - 3 days ago
- Walker Being Recalled
Well the Democrats and the unions are at it again in the state of Wisconsin. They haven't learned their lesson, they still want to be divisive, and of course they still want to waste money. I'm talking of the recall election of Gov. Scott Walker. The last attempts at a recall on the senators and congressmen of Wisconsin was a failure to the tune of $30 million spent by them. I have no idea how much they're spending this time, but the unions are bragging they are spending more that last election, - 7 days ago
- Can Obama Get Reelected in 2012
We all know that the presidential primaries are in full swing with all the noise Republicans are making. The Democratic primaries are currently going on at a much lower fevered pitch. After all what could there be to talk about, Obama is running unopposed, or is he. Turnout in most of the Democratic primaries has been light. In fact, if states did not have key races with Senators or Congressmen on the ballot, it would seem like turnout would be nonexistent. Of course so far in every state with - 2 weeks ago
- Americans It Is Time To Get Involved
Stop the Presses, President Obama makes the major announcement we have been waiting for, he supports gay marriage today even though he was against it in 2008 then for it in 2009 and against it again in 2010. This is what we have been waiting for, this was the big one. Champagne is now flowing; confetti is falling from the skies. - 2 weeks ago
- Can Republicans Win the Presidency in 2012
Do Republicans really have a chance at winning the Presidency in November of 2012? President Obama surely has made it easy enough for almost anyone to defeat him. Pick an issue and you will find nothing that Obama can campaign on. In fact in his speech kicking off his reelection campaign, president Obama did not mention one thing that he accomplished during his first term. All he did was lodge attacks against the Republicans and why it would be so terrible to elect those bad boys. - 2 weeks ago

Does your vote really count? We have all heard the stories over the years, stuffed ballot boxes, ballots destroyed, ballots thrown out, ballots just not counted, and of course the most famous are those hanging chads. We all have the right to vote, its part of what our founding fathers fought for in establishing this new great nation. Every November we the people go to the voting polls whether it is a presidential election, midterm elections for Senators and Congressmen, governors, mayors, judge - 2 weeks ago

It's nice in the cooler weather when we don't have to run our A/C units in Florida. During the summer months (which is about 8 months long) my power bill averages $300-$400 a month. I still prefer heat over cold!
I have to admit I do think he will go down as the president that did the most to help the environment by reducing electricity usage. This will happen because most of us won't be able to afford it at all! He ran on a green energy platform and I'm all for greener sources of energy. He has dumped a ton of money into that and to what end? Nadda! To me this is just more of the same old same old dirty pool tactics that help not a one of us. Thank you for keeping it real.
Bankrupt a nation and save a grass hopper. Yep, that's fresh. Can I cuss as long as I don't consider it vulgar?? See, it's hard to talk about this stuff without cussing George. I don't usually call this president names. It doesn't accpomplish anything positive, so I'll sensor myself. Here goes .. I've said it till I'm blue in the face. If we want to get this "BLEEP"Head out of the White House, we have to smile politely at the left, treat em with respect, and find two people who wouldn't normally vote, and take them to the voting booth with us in November. If we all do that, this dumbBLEEP will be nothing but a bad memory. After that all we have to do is fire 80% of congress, and we're on our way.

A better idea would be so go full-steam with wind and solar, hydro and FREE.
But--that is being stymied by big oil/gas/coal....the usual suspects of hindrance to progress.
I would GLADLY pay more to protect the air we breathe than pay more to go into a ceo's pocket.
Less asthma vs a vaca to switzerland?
Big polluters have had a free hand for a long time. We want something different now.
Clean and renewable. Or better yet: Tesla FREE.
You know, the wind farm here in Mass has been held up for 10 years in the courts....by a big oil polluter. Who funds the TP. hmmm.
Nice independent article av...showed both sides quite well :,)
